| Any time you have granite or engineered stone countertop fabricated and installed in your home, you will be told that you have to buy the number of slabs to complete your job. A "slab" is the actual "sheet" of material used and usually runs from 40 square feet to 55 square feet depending on the material. We have no control over the size of granite slabs as it depends on what was quarried. Since a "normal" kitchen is 50 to 60 square feet, it will normally take two slabs to do your job. Chances are, that will mean that you pay for 20 square feet of material that is not used. To get around this and save you a lot of money, we decided to buy full "bundles" of popular granite colors which allows us to sell each job by the actual square footage of the job, which eliminates this huge "waste" charge. A "bundle" is eight to 13 "slabs" that are cut out of one rock or "block" at the quarry. Since each slab is numbered and cut from the "block" right behind the first "slab" it will match, along with the next "slab". This "bundle" is kept intact and marked to insure this order until we purchase it. Now, when you do your job, it may take only 57 square feet total, and that is what you are charged for, period. Normally on that job, you would be charged about 80 or 90 square feet. Our theory is that the 30 or forty square feet left will match and go with the next job out of that bundle. This is also beneficial if you are doing a bathroom vanity or a wet bar as you pay for exact square footage. The next benefit, is the fact when we buy in quantity, we get a much better deal and the yard delivers the granite for free, which saves a bunch. When we select granite for a "program color" it is a sizeable investment so we examine the slabs closely and only buy the absolute best...period! We basically only use 6 of the more than 100 granite "yards" in town. There are no laws regulating the quality of granite and it can be doctored up easily so it is "buyer beware"! |

| One of the biggest problems that we face in the granite countertop industry is the proliferation of fly by night "fabricators" that offer to do granite countertops for $29.95 per square foot or even less. I saw one advertising for $10.95 per square foot once. They tend to advertise with "bandit signs" next to the road. Almost all of these are people that have been fired by every shop that they have worked for and most are undocumented illegals. They are free to tell you anything that you want to hear because they have nothing to lose. Most use "premade " countertop sections which are imported from China which are made from reject granite that has been dyed, glued together and impregnated with wax to make it look good. For all you know, these could have been made out of countertops taken out of hotels or used before. We will never ever buy granite from China because there is absolutely no regulation and anything goes. It is just not worth taking the chance. |
| There are also a few legitimate fabricators that will advertise granite countertops "starting at $29.95 per square foot installed", which is nothing but the classic "bait and switch" as they have NEVER EVER sold a countertop for that amount. If they have one to show, it will be a bogus color with a plain edge that nobody would buy. |
| One of the latest scams that we have seen is offering a lower square foot price and jacking the square footage up to cover the shortage. Most kitchens run 45 to 60 square feet but you would be surprised how many people come in with bids showing 117 to 130 square feet with a $39.95 per square foot price. We will put our pricing up against any other bid that you have. We are trying to change the way countertops are sold by giving an honest square foot price based on exact square footage. |
